The Museum of Mississippi History in Jackson opened on December 9, 2017, beside the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum as part of Mississippi’s bicentennial observance. Administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, it grew from plans authorized in 1998 and was realized after years of design, funding, and construction shaped in part by delays following Hurricane Katrina. The paired museums were intentionally linked to place the state’s broad past alongside the focused story of the civil rights movement. Through exhibits, programs, and artifacts, the museum traces about 15,000 years of Mississippi history, connecting ancient settlement, colonization, slavery, war, reform, and modern change within one narrative.
