Lincoln School was a hallmark of the black community, dedicated on September 8, 1940, with G.R. Houston as its first principal. In 1944, county schools merged with Lincoln, creating crowded conditions, and the school was enlarged several times from 1955 to 1961. It served the Harristown district until schools were integrated in 1965. Its theme was “so teach us, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom,” its colors were purple and gold, and for a quarter of a century it stood at the center of community activities and as a great source of pride. The current two-story portion of the original school building was saved, preserving the black heritage of Lincoln.
