SS Meteor, preserved at Barkers Island in Superior, Wisconsin, is the only surviving whaleback freighter from the Great Lakes, a type designed by Alexander McDougall to maximize cargo while drawing little water. Built in Superior in 1896 as Frank Rockefeller, she hauled iron ore, coal, and grain, later served as a sand dredge, automobile carrier, and tanker, and survived several accidents and repeated conversions. By 1969 she was the last original whaleback still afloat. After severe damage ended her commercial career, she was returned to Superior in 1971 and preserved as a museum, linking the region to its industrial shipping past.
