Nearly all the guns stationed on Commissary Hill to guard the approaches to the mill between the left wing and the center were dismounted or otherwise disabled after concentrated fire from two enemy batteries of 20- and 30-pounder Parrott guns struck the Confederate light guns. At this position, Captains Bradford and Sparkman, who commanded light batteries, were wounded, and Sparkman was mortally wounded. Constructed as part of the earthworks around Commissary Hill, the battery was armed with one gun from the Madison Tennessee Battery and another from Battery F, 1st Mississippi Regiment.
