Correctionville, the city with the longest single name in Iowa, took its name from the correction line that forms Fifth Street through the heart of the business district. Surveyors used correction lines in making land divisions because, since the world is round, land divisions running from north to south could not all be the same size as the Earth curves toward the top. To allow for this, east-west correction lines were established, and adjustments were made along those lines to keep land parcels nearly equal in size. In Correctionville, each north-south street is adjusted at the Fifth Street correction line, creating a jog. The main jog stands at the heart of town, at Fifth and Driftwood, where the three townships of Rock, Kedron, and Union meet.
