Samuel Coles received an original land grant in 1676 from William Penn, purchased New Orchard in 1685 on what are now the cemetery grounds, served as a member of the state legislature from 1683 to 1685, and died at Barbados in 1693, survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ibbs, his son Samuel, and his daughter Sarah.
