In the winter of 1775-76, General Henry Knox, commander of artillery for the Continental Army during the American Revolution, passed through this place while delivering the train of artillery captured at Fort Ticonderoga to General George Washington at Cambridge, Massachusetts, for use in forcing the British to evacuate Boston.
