Seven men from the Winnebago Tribe, now known as the Ho-Chunk Nation, served as Ho-Chunk warriors in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division during World War I: Cpl. Foster Decorah, Robert Decorah, Dewey Mike, Jesse Thompson, Nelson R. Delaronde, James Greengrass, and Mike Standingwater. On 9-29-1918, Allied forces with the American Army broke the German defense, and World War I ended on 11-11-1918. The 32nd Division broke the Hindenburg Line, and through this action earned the name "Red Arrow" Division. Henry Decorah, who served with his father Foster, said, "The red symbolizes the bloodshed as we fought and pierced the line straight as an arrow." Foster Decorah, Robert Decorah, Dewey Mike, and Jesse Thompson were killed in action; Nelson R. Delaronde was missing in action; James Greengrass was gassed; and Mike Standingwater died of pneumonia.
