Howell Living History Farm in Hopewell, New Jersey, also known as the Joseph Phillips Farm, preserves a long-worked agricultural landscape and interprets rural life around 1900. Established in 1732 when blacksmith Joseph Phillips bought 125 acres, it expanded under his son Henry Phillips, a Continental Army captain during the American Revolution. Records from Henry’s 1805 death reveal a working farm with oxen, a Rockingham colt, flax, and two enslaved people. Most surviving buildings date to the 19th century, largely from before the Civil War. Donated by the Howell family in 1974, the farm was recognized for its agricultural and architectural significance and is now county owned and operated.
