During the Civil War, Confederate and Union forces camped at or near the Lost River Cave Valley. It is estimated that up to 40,000 troops of the Union Army's 14th Corps were here before transferring to Nashville and then fighting in the battle of Stone River. Union Colonel John Beatty wrote that "The wreck of an old mill stands on the bank of the stream."
