In 1857, Nancy Landers Criswell (1777-1867) set aside part of her property as a community cemetery, intending that no one would ever be charged for burial there. The earliest grave, that of Rhoda Shackleford, dates to 1850 and predates the cemetery's establishment. With more than 400 graves, Criswell Cemetery contains veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and it is also the burial place of Mary Francis (Blythe) Criswell, a relative of President William Jefferson (Blythe) Clinton.
