Dr. Ralph T. Holman moved to Austin in 1951 to join The Hormel Institute and continue his pioneering work in essential fatty acid research, food stabilization technology, and nutrition. For more than three decades, he conducted world-renowned lipid research and became best known for coining the terms "omega-3" and "omega-6" fatty acids. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a past president of the American Oil Chemists' Society. From 1975 to 1985, Professor Holman served as Director of The Hormel Institute and also served on the Board of Directors for The Hormel Foundation. As a mentor to many at The Hormel Institute, his scientific discoveries improved the lives of millions around the globe through nutritional research.
