The Katy Hamman-Stricker Library in Calvert, Texas, was built in 1909 as an American Woman’s League chapter house, the first erected in Texas and one of the first four in the United States. Created through local efforts led by Katy Hamman-Stricker, it reflected a broader organization that promoted women’s suffrage and educational, cultural, and business opportunities. Designed as a modest Prairie School building, it became the town library in 1939 after the Calvert Woman’s Club purchased it. As the only surviving American Woman’s League chapter house in Texas, it preserves the legacy of women’s civic networks and remains a community institution.
