Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument
History
4
Created in 2023, this National Park System unit preserves three sites in Illinois and Mississippi tied to Emmett Till’s 1955 murder and Mamie Till-Mobley’s response. In Chicago, Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ was the site of Till’s funeral, where his mother’s insistence on an open casket helped expose the crime to the nation and drew more than ten thousand mourners. In Mississippi, Graball Landing is believed to be where his body was recovered, and the Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse was where Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam were tried and acquitted. Together these places connect violence, public witness, injustice, and lasting national memory.
