After the television show “Finding Bigfoot” stopped in southwest Virginia in 2011 to film an episode about Bigfoot or Sasquatch sightings in the Norton area, especially around the High Knob Recreation Area, the Norton City Council adopted a resolution on October 21, 2014, declaring the City of Norton a Sasquatch, Bigfoot, and Woodbooger Sanctuary. The resolution rested on the possibility that High Knob and adjoining Norton recreational areas could be habitat for the elusive creature and on the view that, if the creature exists as believed by those who seek it, it appears to be an endangered species. Norton also welcomed people who seek to find and photograph the creature, provided they do not injure it or damage the habitat where it may live.
