Lone Cedar Post Office was established on June 4, 1867, in the home of Kilburn Archer, its first postmaster, and was named after a large cedar tree growing in Section 18, Manyaska Township. It was an important transfer point, served by the Fairmont-Jackson stage route from the east and the St. James route from the north. Archer also maintained a tavern in a sod house called Lone Cedar Tavern and Half-Way House because it stood midway between Fairmont and Jackson, where the stage stopped to refresh horses, drivers, and passengers, and where meals and overnight lodging were available. On January 6, 1879, Lone Cedar was changed to Sherburne Post Office, later Sherburn, when the Milwaukee Railroad reached Sherburn. During its twelve years of existence, it served more than one hundred pioneer families.
