This location served as Petoskey’s post office from 1918 until 1962, when the growth of the surrounding townships led to a decision to build a new facility and move operations to 216 State Street. The post office building was razed, and in 1969 First State Bank and Trust became the next occupant. First State Bank had been located at 300 Howard Street since 1891. In 1983 Old Kent Bank of Grand Rapids bought First State Bank and opened in Petoskey in 1984. During Old Kent’s time at this address, it bought the properties at 312 and 314 East Mitchell for future expansion. By 2000 Old Kent Bank had been acquired by Fifth Third Bank of Cincinnati, which expanded into the 312 and 314 addresses with a new two-story building. All of the original eight addresses are now combined into 300 East Mitchell Street.
