Little Missouri State Park in western North Dakota occupies more than 6,000 acres of badlands west of the Little Missouri River near Lake Sakakawea and north of Killdeer. Known for rugged terrain and an unusually remote, backcountry character, much of it can be reached only by trail. More than 45 miles of trails cross the park, and its campgrounds serve both hikers and equestrians. Much of the land is managed through leases from federal and private owners. In recent years, oil development in the Killdeer area has affected the landscape and visitor experience, prompting trail rerouting and calls to protect the park’s views.
