Robert Nesbitt, known as the man who named Convoy, Ohio, was born in Convoy in Donegal, Ireland, in December 1810. He emigrated to the United States and moved to Van Wert County in the late 1830s. In 1939, he purchased 120 acres in Tully Township. On June 16, 1854, Robert Nesbit and James Pettit platted a village in the western part of Van Wert County, and Nesbit named the town Convoy, from Conmhaigh in Gaelic, after his Irish roots. Convoy was incorporated in 1874. At age 47, Nesbit married Catherine Byers. He lived in Tully Township for about 40 years, served as a justice of the peace for 9 years, and died of typhoid pneumonia on May 1, 1879, at the age of 68 years and 7 months. He was remembered as a straightforward, well-to-do farmer who was much respected by a host of friends.
