In Montevallo, Alabama, the Aldrich Coal Mine Museum preserves the history of Aldrich, a former coal mining town absorbed into Montevallo, inside the old Montevallo Mine Company store and commissary. Coal mining there dates to at least 1839, and the building remained in use until July 5, 1942. Owned by Truman and William Farrington Aldrich’s company, the commissary is now part of the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage and the Historic American Engineering Record. The museum recreates a 1940s company store and interprets mining work, community life, and the experiences of African American residents, while also reflecting local preservation efforts and serving as a memorial site.
