On September 16, 1958, a U.S. Air Force B-52D bomber from Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine, crashed here during a Cold War training mission. Seven crewmen died: Captain Wm. C. Horstman of Kansas City, Missouri, the pilot; Captain Richard J. Cantwell of Phoenix, Arizona, the navigator; Major S. O. Gillespie, Jr., of Atlanta, Georgia, the radar observer; 1st Lt. Wm. F. Huskey of Norman, Oklahoma, the engineer; T/Sgt. Leon R. Lew of Skokie, Illinois, the tail gunner; Captain James D. Taylor of Dixon, Kentucky, an instructor; and Captain Benard D. Lanois of San Diego, California, an instructor. Captain Jack D. Craft of Purvis, Mississippi, was injured and survived. Eight members of August Kahl's family were also injured in the crash. The crewmen, though far from their homes, were remembered by the citizens of Inver Grove Heights, the State of Minnesota, and the country they served.
