Winter Harbor Light, active from 1856 to 1930, stood on Mark Island and guarded the entrance to Winter Harbor Sound, lighting the way for ships and small craft to reach the safety of Winter Harbor; after the Coast Guard decommissioned it in 1930, it became a private home. The light, known locally as Mark Island Light, has been regarded as one of the area's most photogenic lighthouses. Egg Rock Light, manned by keepers from 1875 to 1966, was built in 1875 on a mass of ledges halfway between Schoodic Point and Mount Desert Island, with its tower atop the roof of the keepers' house, and the Coast Guard automated its light in 1966.
