The privately developed Hamilton Hydraulic opened on January 27, 1845, providing cheap, reliable water power and beginning Hamilton's era of industrial growth and diversification. Water was diverted into the hydraulic canal system from the Great Miami River north of Hamilton. The water level fell 29 feet in about five miles before returning to the river at the foot of Market Street.
