Founded as the oldest public burial ground in the county, this cemetery, known as Old City or Forsyth Street Cemetery, served as the burial place of founding fathers of Americus, including the city’s first mayor, the first sheriff of Sumter County, and men credited with naming the city. The graveyard fell into disuse between 1861 and 1865 when the new cemetery, Oakgrove, was established, and it was saved as a historical monument in 1968 by the Americus and Sumter County Federated Garden Clubs.
