In February 1980, General Dynamics proposed an F-16 with a radically modified cranked-arrow delta wing known as SCAMP, or Supersonic Cruise and Maneuvering Program. With a total wing surface of 633 square feet, more than double the area of the standard F-16 wing, the design aimed to explore wing planform and camber shapes that could provide efficient supersonic cruise performance while retaining fighter-like transonic and supersonic turning agility. Intended to offer low drag at high subsonic or supersonic speeds without compromising low-speed maneuverability, the F-16XL was also more than four feet longer than the production F-16A and was developed as a multi-role strike aircraft to compete against the F-15E Strike Eagle. Two prototypes were built: No. 1, serial number 75-0749, as a single-seat version, and No. 2, serial number 75-0747, as a two-seat version. They were flight tested from mid-1982 through 1985 before being placed in storage. In 1989, No. 1 was taken from storage and modified for NASA test work on supersonic laminar flow and sonic-boom research in conjunction with an SR-71. In 1992, No. 2 returned to service at the Dryden Flight Research Center and took over the supersonic laminar flow project from No. 1. The F-16XL never entered production, and only the two prototypes were built. Both aircraft are on Edwards AFB, with No. 1 on display at the Air Force Flight Test Museum and No. 2 awaiting shipment to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.
