San Onofre State Beach is a 3,000-acre coastal park in northern San Diego County, established in 1971 and notable for being leased from the United States Marine Corps. One of California’s most visited state parks, it includes beaches, bluffs, chaparral, San Mateo Creek’s marshy mouth, campgrounds, and famed surf spots such as Trestles and Surf Beach, long central to California surf culture. The coast is also the site of Panhe, an Acjachemen village more than 8,000 years old that remains sacred and historically significant. Later shaped by ranching, rail service, wartime displacement, and modern battles over roads and development, the area joins recreation, ecology, and deep Indigenous history.
