Camp Reynolds was the site of a 3300-acre U.S. Army facility from 1942 to 1945. It was originally the Shenango Personnel Replacement Depot and was renamed in 1943. During World War II, about a million troops passed through here, most headed for Europe. At its peak, 75,000 were housed here at one time, and racial unrest flared up in July 1943. More than 1800 German prisoners of war were also held here from 1944 to 1946. After 1946, the site became a scene of major civilian development.
