The Nauvoo House in Nauvoo, Illinois, began in 1841 as a public boarding house project closely tied to Joseph Smith and the early Latter Day Saint movement. Authorized by a revelation and overseen by the Nauvoo House Association, it was intended as a resting place for travelers, but construction stopped in 1844 when resources shifted to the Nauvoo Temple. After Joseph and Hyrum Smith were killed, their bodies were secretly buried in its cellar before later reinterment elsewhere. Still unfinished when most Saints left Nauvoo, the structure was remodeled in the 1870s by Emma Smith and Lewis C. Bidamon into the Riverside Mansion, linking it to both early church history and Emma Smith’s later life.
