Bald Hill in Farmingville, in the Town of Brookhaven, is one of Long Island’s highest points and part of the Ronkonkoma Moraine, the glacial ridge marking where the glacier that formed the island halted. Known as “Bald Hills” in the late 18th century, it was passed by George Washington in 1790. For more than a century, the hill has been shaped by recreation and access, from a bicycle path opened in 1897 to overlooks built with Patchogue–Mt. Sinai Road in 1970 and 1971. From 1965 to 1980 it hosted Long Island’s largest public ski facility. Today it is best known for Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park and the Brookhaven Amphitheater.
