At iron works below the pond south of Ironville, Allen Penfield, Timothy Taft, and Allen Harwood pioneered the first industrial use of electricity. In 1833, Thomas Davenport, a blacksmith of Brandon, Vermont, bought the electro-magnet used in his forge there, an event that led to his invention of the electric motor.
