Round Rock
Nature
Round Rock is a prominent six thousand three hundred ten-foot mesa on Navajo Nation land in northeastern Arizona, rising steeply above Chinle Valley and named from the Navajo Tsé Nikání, meaning round flat-topped rock. Formed from Wingate Sandstone over the Chinle Formation, it stands out for climbing about seven hundred feet above the surrounding terrain in a short distance. The mesa also holds cultural importance in Navajo tradition: one story recalls its use as a fortress reached by braided yucca ropes, while another regards it as sacred and not to be climbed. Its official place name was adopted by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names in 1915.
