Mackinac National Park occupied part of Mackinac Island in northern Michigan from 1875 to 1895 as the nation’s second national park after Yellowstone. Established through efforts led by Senator Thomas W. Ferry, it included many of the island’s best-known natural landmarks and adjoined Fort Mackinac, whose commander and soldiers managed the park while the fort remained an active U.S. Army garrison. With no federal operating funds, the park relied on road and trail building authority and limited leases to cover expenses while preserving the land for military use. After the fort was decommissioned, the park and fort passed to Michigan and became Mackinac Island State Park.
