Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown Detroit interprets the region’s history from the eighteenth-century fur trade through nineteenth-century commerce and the rise of industrial Detroit, using immersive exhibits such as recreated streets, shops, toy trains, and an auto assembly line. Its roots lie in Clarence M. Burton’s collecting and the founding of the Detroit Historical Society in 1921. After beginning in 1928 in a small high-rise space, the museum moved into its present building in 1951. Its mission later expanded to maritime and military sites, while its collections grew to more than 200,000 items. Renovations and new exhibitions have continually refreshed its role as a leading interpreter of Detroit’s civic and industrial past.
