Mrs. Merriweather Post, daughter of C. W. Post, lived in Texas from 1888 to 1891 and joined her father in locating the colony here in 1906. After the 1917 drought, she helped rescue the local economy. She was co-donor of the site for Post Recreation Center, donated the South Plains Council Boy Scouts Camp, and gave books and paintings to South Plains College. A leading philanthropist in the arts and humanities, she was also a benefactress of C. W. Post College of Long Island University and founder of "Music for Young America." She received 30 citations for service, 3 honorary degrees, and 6 foreign decorations, and was remembered as a woman endowed with true virtues of generosity and compassion.
