Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest
Nature
Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest in Lake County, California, was established in 1949 and put into operation in 1950 as a practical experiment in restoring and managing a heavily clear-cut landscape. Covering nearly 3,500 acres of volcanic highland, it has served for decades as a working forest for research on reforestation, logging methods, thinning, disease control, and fire, while also supporting recreation and a Cal Fire helicopter base since 1972. The Valley Fire of October 6, 2015, burned much of the mountain and killed most mature and young trees, leading to extensive salvage logging and a large reforestation effort that continued as the forest remained open for day use in 2021.
