Citizens of Bloomington erected this monument on Memorial Day, 1890, in honor and memory of the country's defenders of 1861 to 1865. It names the monument committee as Sever Ellingson, chairman, Wm. Oxborough, Jr., H.H. Pond, treasurer, J.N. Kelly, and E.B. Miller, secretary. It lists those who died in the service: John McClay, Orville Ames, Martin S. Whalen, and John Livercomb of Company B, 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry; Robert Chadwick of Company A, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry; Mariner W. Gates, Charles A. Gates, and William B. Bush of Company D, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry; William Logan of Company K, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry; George W. Palmer of Berdan's Sharpshooters; and James Hyland of 3rd Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. It also lists those who died since discharge: James Crammond of 2nd Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, Thomas Matten, George Ames of Company D, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, Jasper Brown, John Starrett of Company C, 6th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, James Kelley of 116th New York Volunteer Infantry, and George S. Robinson of 6th Missouri Cavalry.
