South Road marked the forks of the 1846 and 1853 roads in a landscape Major Green later characterized as rolling ground where for miles neither wagon wheel nor horse's foot ever touched the soil because the ground was covered with loose rocks as thick as they could be planted, a "Devils Garden" still found there on September 19, 1872.
