California's Governor's Mansion in Sacramento, built in 1877 for hardware merchant Albert Gallatin, became state property in 1903 and served as the official residence for 14 governors. A thirty-room, three-story Second Empire-Italianate Victorian, it later became a historic house museum under California State Parks after governors ceased regularly living there in 1967. Its furnishings preserve connections to past administrations, and after years in which governors lived elsewhere, a $4.1 million renovation allowed Jerry Brown and Anne Gust Brown to return it to residential use in 2015. The mansion remains both a public historic site and a symbol of California's executive history.
