Anasazi State Park Museum in Boulder, Utah, preserves the Coombs Village Site, one of the largest known Anasazi communities west of the Colorado River. Occupied from about 1160 to 1235, the village may have housed as many as 250 people. Excavations by the University of Utah in 1958 and 1959 uncovered thousands of artifacts, about 90 rooms in two one-story residential blocks, and roughly 100 structures including storage pits, work shelters, and adobe pit houses. Much of the settlement remains unexcavated. Evidence suggests the community was abandoned after a fire, and severe drought may also have played a role. Today the site includes a reconstructed building, trails, and museum exhibits.
