Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway is an 8,700-acre state park along Lake Somerville in central Texas, managed in four units and linked in part by the Somerville Trailway. The area has a long human history, with archaeological evidence of aboriginal hunter-gatherer groups from about A.D. 900 to 1800 and Caddo people present after A.D. 1400. Lake Somerville was created as a federal reservoir for flood control, water supply, and recreation, with construction beginning in 1962 and impoundment in 1967; Texas leased parkland in 1969, and the park opened in 1970. Its trails, campsites, diverse habitats, and abundant wildlife make it a major recreation and conservation area.
