Baldy Shaw purchased this property from the state of Alabama in 1830 and built the home in 1844. Over the years, various owners altered the Shaw Home and its outbuildings. A canning building stands directly north of the house and made it possible to can garden-raised food without affecting the temperature of the main house. Evidence of Fennell Road lies directly behind the canning building on the home's north boundary line. During the Civil War, Fennell Road provided constant access to and from many skirmishes between Northern and Southern armies, including the Battle of Town Creek. The property remains a working farm with 2 wells and 9 farm buildings, preserving an example of tranquil southern life while also recalling the sadness of the Civil War fought between brothers, families, and states.
