Frances Slocum State Park in Kingston Township centers on Frances Slocum Lake, a flood-control reservoir created in 1968 and later developed into a year-round recreation area for boating, fishing, hunting, camping, and trails. The park is named for Frances Slocum, a settler child captured by Lenape in 1778, who lived the rest of her life among Native Americans as Mocanaquah, or “Young Bear.” Local tradition places her first night of captivity beneath a rock ledge along Abraham Creek within the park. After Hurricane Agnes in 1972, the park briefly served as temporary housing for 280 displaced families before reopening in 1974.
