Flores Peak, a summit in Orange County's Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary, overlooks Harding and Modjeska canyons and is named for outlaw Juan Flores. In 1857, after Flores and the Flores Daniel Gang killed Los Angeles County Sheriff James R. Barton and three posse members, they fled to the peak while General Andrés Pico led the pursuit. As men under Tomas Avila Sanchez and Bethel Coopwood charged up the mountain under fire, Flores escaped down the steep slope on horseback with two companions, though three gang members were captured there. Flores was caught the next day, escaped again, and was later recaptured in Simi Pass, making the chase one of early Southern California's best-known outlaw pursuits.
