Dipper Dredge No. 3, the tug Dewitt Clinton, and a barge were part of canal work on the Erie Canal, and Dipper Dredge No. 3 was completed in 1929 with some recycled components dating to 1909. It has been out of operation since 1985 and has remained in the Lyons dry dock, and because it is a steam vessel it is highly unlikely to return to service. Poor House Lock 56 belonged to an important transportation system of its time, begun in 1842 and completed in 1849. Jacob and Augustus Leach of Lyons, a father and son, were associated with its development, with Jacob instrumental in the canal's development and Augustus an engineer and inventor of the drop gate. Mule drivers Richard Garrity and Glen Salisbury traveled the towpath and navigated this lock, a brick building on the left bank served travelers as a grocery store, and the ruins of Lock 56 lie about one-half mile west of present-day Lock 28-A.
