In memory and honor of Texans who perished in the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and the brave Texas heroes of Operation Enduring Freedom, the events of that day are recalled through the World Trade Center North Tower and American Airlines Flight 11 at 8:45 AM, the World Trade Center South Tower and United Airlines Flight 175 at 9:03 AM, the Pentagon West Wall and American Airlines Flight 77 at 9:43 AM, Somerset County, Pennsylvania and United Airlines Flight 93 at 10:10 AM, and the White House in Washington, DC at 8:30 PM. President of the United States George W. Bush declared, "These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American Resolve." Steel columns salvaged from the World Trade Center at Ground Zero in New York City were preserved, and the memorial was dedicated on September 11, 2003. Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, said, "Texans have answered the tragedy of September 11 with courage, sacrifice and love. The freedom we cherish is a precious commodity, purchased at a great price."
