Green Spring, five miles south on this road, was the home of Governor Sir William Berkeley. Bacon the Rebel occupied it in 1676. After moving from Williamsburg by this road on July 4, 1781, Cornwallis was attacked near Green Spring by Lafayette on July 6, 1781, and Anthony Wayne was the hero of the fight.
