During the Civil War, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church served as headquarters for General Lafayette McLaws while his troops from the Army of Northern Virginia were bivouacked around Brownsville on September 11, 1862. It later served as a hospital for his wounded after the Battle of Antietam. Union forces subsequently burned the church’s interior, leaving it a shell until it was reconstructed in 1869.
