Andrews Bald
Nature
1
Andrews Bald is a 5,920-foot mountain on Forney Ridge in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, just south of Kuwohi. Its broad grassy bald lies on the south slope below the double summit, making it the highest grassy bald in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The origins of such balds remain uncertain, though cattle grazing helped keep them open through the 19th century. After forest began reclaiming them following the park’s creation in the 1930s, public support in the early 1980s led to continued maintenance here and at Gregory Bald. The mountain is probably named for early settler Andres Thompson.
