The Discovery Center of Springfield is a nonprofit interactive science center in Springfield, Missouri, known for hands-on science learning and children’s education. Emerging from a late-1980s community effort led by the Junior League of Springfield, it was incorporated in 1991 and opened in January 1998 after years of volunteer work to secure and renovate a building, create exhibits, and establish operations. Its growth into a regional science center was marked by a major expansion completed in September 2006. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it stayed open to provide emergency licensed childcare, free meals, and snacks for healthcare workers’ and first responders’ families, earning national recognition and a $1 million award in December 2021.
