In October 1909, one month after the founding of Jourdanton, seven residents organized a Baptist church under the direction of the Rev. W.G. Gilstrap. The members first worshiped in the community schoolhouse and were led by the Rev. A.P. Smith in his first pastorate. By the end of 1910, the congregation had built its first wood-frame church at Cantrell Avenue and Poplar Street. In 1911, the women formed a women's missionary union to raise funds for missions and support church projects. Mission work at home and abroad remained a focus throughout the church's history, with donations to the Buckner Orphans Home and other Texas organizations. The congregation also worked with children and youth, beginning an annual vacation bible school in 1938, and added a brotherhood organization in 1939. During World War II, members bought war bonds and held special services for families. A new church building was constructed in 1946, with members meeting at the Jourdanton High School auditorium until the first services were held there in December. That sanctuary was replaced in 1977, and a large worship center was completed and dedicated in 2003. Having existed almost as long as Jourdanton itself, the church remains a vital part of the city's past and present.
